Julie Wakefield is an artist, designer, and aspiring educator based in Connecticut.
Her professional design work entails communicating artistic, classic, and thoughtful visuals that aim to uniquely resonate with the world. In addition to standard design applications, she has experience in hands-on design approaches, such as book-making, hand-made type, and printmaking. She has a background in garment print production, accessing silkscreen, embroidery, and machine sewing. These interests overlap in her inclusion of studying and incorporating fabric and textiles in her art. Her work explores identity within both commercial and natural environments.
"My work examines how human identity is shaped by the complex environments we inhabit: commercial spaces, natural landscapes, and the real and imagined results of industrial impact. Through experimental printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media, I explore the tension between order and uncertainty. Textiles and garments as material and as subject inform my approach, because I am drawn to the ways clothing lends itself to the tension between the organic and the engineered—born once from the human hand, or replicated infinitely by the machine."
